As with many things, my feelings are mixed and nuanced. I believe that all people can develop these skills should they feel the call/desire. With some folks it may take more effort than others. ;) I’m a 6th generation… whatever I am, lol. I hesitate to call myself a medium since my skills at communicating with humans in spirit is quite minimal, but I do have quite a bit of experience in communing with nature/plant/animal spirits and deities. I am a leaper between worlds, a hedge rider. My mother is a medium, and her mother was a medium and a witch. I know nothing of my grandmother’s practice, other than a few fragments my mother remembers from her childhood. These practices go back quite a bit in my lineage, though it’s always been rather hush-hush, all fragments, rarely explicit. What I know I know because I found it, because the spirits have led me, because I am well-read, because I am curious, because I am open. How much of that is due to blood? I can’t be sure, nor would I ever say I am “special” or “chosen” or any similar bullshit due to my lineage. To me it is largely irrelevant. All of my relatives are engineers, scientists, physicists, and I’m in the arts. Some of us are black sheep.
Can witchcraft be hereditary? Sure. But I wouldn’t let that discourage anyone without knowledge of any prior family history of their own to feel lesser than, discouraged, or not as awesome as someone who does. In the end I think it’s irrelevant. If your father is Picasso it doesn’t mean you’ll be an amazing painter. ;) So it is with witchery.
